Democracy cannot function without a free and informed media. To support a civil society, the press must be financially viable, have access to information, and be free to publish what it believes it must.

In many countries around the globe, the news media is  struggling for survival.  Truth is punished by censorship, economic reprisal, and sometimes death. Journalists and media managers need business skills, as well as specialized journalism training to cover complex economic, environmental and investigative stories which have pivotal impact on their societies.

The World Free Press Institute provides training programs and assistance to media organizations struggling to meet these challenges. Our officers and directors represent a broad spectrum of media professionals from Africa, Europe and the United States. We work in partnership with local journalism organizations to provide training tailored to meet the needs of local journalists, and to help them develop support networks.

In the past year, the World Free Press Institute and its directors have worked with journalists from throughout East Africa, as well as Lithuania, Ukraine and elsewhere.

"Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate to prefer the latter."
